The best cheap 24 pin to 8 pin adapter to get. When upgrading your Dell Optiplex 9020, 7020, 3020, computer you will need a 24 pin to 8 pin adapter. The stock motherboard uses a 8 pin power input that only Dell uses. Most aftermarket power supplies come with a 24 pin motherboard connector. You also will need to power the CPU on the Dell 9020. This uses a 4 pin plug instead of the common 8 pin. This video below will show you how to upgrade.
This compares the most popular 24 pin to 8 pin adapter (COMeap 24 Pin to 8 Pin Power Adapter Cable) to the cheapest (XA CNEW ATX 24pin to 8pin Power Supply Cable) and we find the cheap sub $8 plug works just as good as the more expensive adapter.
There is also the 4 Pin EPS12v connector to be plugged in. Attaching this is not an option. Some power supplies have an 8 pin connector for EPS12v motherboard connector that must be split into a 4 + 4. This 8 pin will not work as the 8 pin connector on the motherboard for power. The 24 pin power goes to the 24 pin to 8 pin adapter then the 8 pin on motherboard.
One thing to look for in the video. At the 2:05 time he shows how you must split the 8 pin CPU power plug into two 4 pin plugs. This will let you get the proper amount of power to your CPU and fan. Plugging in the wrong power cord could fry your Dell motherboard.
Please thank CameraRay.com for the great repair video for the Dell upgrade.
Before attempting any upgrades or repairs to your Dell computer please be safe and first unplug the power cord.
Thanks so much. I bought the COMeap 24 Pin to 8 Pin in the link above. It worked great for both the Dell Optiplex 9020 and 7020 custom builds I just finished. The 9020 with Thermaltake Smart Pro RGB 850W and the COMeap 24 Pin to 8 Pin have been running for 2 weeks with no issues so far.
